Davis Islands is a unique Tampa community located on an island just off the downtown shore. The community is relatively small, with a population of 5,436 according to the last census. Davis Islands has a lot to offer, and has an interesting history.
Davis Islands is built on two man-made islands – Little Grassy Key and Big Grassy Key. The islands, created from mud from Tampa Bay, were built in the 1920s. Initially it was meant to be a resort community, but the man who bought the islands vanished at sea in 1926. Development was slow in the 30s because of the Depression, but things picked up after that. Today, many buildings on the island have Historic Designation.
The island features its own airport, the Peter O. Knight Airport. It also has yacht clubs and basins for water lovers and boat owners, and even a seaplane basin close to the Davis Island Yacht Club. Davis Island Dog Park and Dog Beach, which are just south of the airport, are popular with residents. You can find retail areas, shopping and dining, although many residents head to Tampa for more options.
