Gulfport has an interesting history. The area went through several names in the early years. In 1884, they tried to name it Disston City after landowner Hamilton Disston. The USPS would not allow for the name though, as it was the same as a town in neighboring Hillsborough County. Instead, they called it Bonifacio. Six years later the name was changed to Veteran City, and 20 years after that, in 1910 the name was finalized as Gulfport.

Art is very popular in the city. On the first Friday and the third Saturday of every month the city features an “Art Walk”, where you can find residents and tourists alike strolling the vendor bays. On Tuesdays, between 9AM and 3PM all year long, they hold a Fresh Market along the Gulfport Waterfront district where they sell seafood, produce, baked goods, arts and crafts, and more. Gulfport has some popular annual festivals as well, including SpringFest, Get Rescued in Gulfport, and Gecko Fest.
