Treasure Island History and Information
Treasure Island, nicknamed the “Jewel of the Gulf Beaches,” mesmerizes residents and visitors with its blue waters and white sandy beaches. With five exclusive neighborhoods and active local commerce, Treasure Island is a great place to live and work. There are approximately 5,000 full time residents and 7,500 seasonal occupants.
The tale behind how Treasure Island got its name is amusing. In 1918, frequent historic Coney Island Hotel guest Bill McAdoo and friend, William Brantley, buried “treasure” one night on the nearby beach. The next day they “discovered” the treasure, which stimulated media and public attention. People began referring to the area as the island where treasure was found, and the Treasure Island designation stuck. Four towns, Treasure Island, Boca Ciega, Sunshine Beach, and Sunset Beach, incorporated as the City of Treasure Island in 1955.
Treasure Island residents enjoy the pleasures of these five distinctive neighborhoods:
Sunshine Beach, one of Treasure Island’s original neighborhoods, is on the north central part of island. Home styles are a mixture of classic beach cottages and modern condos. Bordered by the Intracoastal Waterway on the east and the Gulf of Mexico on the west, the views are breathtaking.
Isle of Capri is surrounded by Boca Ciega Bay and offers has a variety of single-family residences, condominiums, and apartments, all with deep-water access. Treasure Island’s Rosselli Park and famous Little League Ball Field provides Isle of Capri residents with a superb family friendly atmosphere.
Isle of Palms’ is a peaceful neighborhood where all homes sit on waterfront lots, and is also surrounded by Boca Ciega Bay. Treasure Island’s splendid beach, the widest of all the barrier-island beaches, is located within a few short blocks.
Paradise Island has many amenities including golf, tennis and the Paradise Island Yacht Club. Residents of Paradise Island love to come home to quiet waterfront living in a harmonious setting of both single-family homes and luxurious townhomes. The neighborhood is at the east end of Treasure Island.
Sunset Beach is at the south end of Treasure Island. With a classic Florida flair, residents enjoy a pleasant fusion of beach cottages, modern beachfront homes, and condominiums. With water on three sides, the Sunset Beach neighborhood views are spectacular and the beach is only a few steps away.
