St Pete Beach History and Information
St Pete Beach, officially the Sunset Capital of Florida, is the southernmost beach city on the barrier islands of Pinellas county Florida (FL). Pass-a-Grille, which is a community in St Pete Beach, points in to the mouth of Tampa Bay at its northernmost point.
Each town on the barrier islands has its own unique feel. The two areas with the most resort-like feel on the barrier island are St Pete Beach in the south and Clearwater Beach at the north end. Each have many hotels and resorts and fewer permanent residents. The latest information from the University of Florida show a permanent population of 10,232 residents, and about 28% of the population as full-time residents.
St Petersburg Beach was consolidated in 1957 from the towns of Pass-a-Grille, Don Cesar, Belle Vista, St Petersburg Beach and an unincorporated part of Pinellas County. In 1994 it was voted by citizens to shorten the name to the popular shorter name of St Pete Beach (often misspronounced as St Pete’s Beach) to minimize confusion with the city of St Petersburg.
Speaking of Pass-a-Grille here is an interesting historical note. In the early 1900’s there was a population of Cuban immigrant fishermen in that area. They would catch fish and then smoke them over open fires at night. Boats would pass by and see these fires, and eventually these men became know as Grillers. The boats passing by would literally “pass a Griller,” thus the eventual name Pass-a-Grille.
With over 3,000 accommodation units for visitors St Pete Beach is a major tourist destination. Here are four of the most popular resorts, and four of our favorites, each with its own unique feel:
The Don Cesar hotel is at the high end of the luxury resorts on St Pete Beach. It is an unmistakable pink landmark sitting on the beach just at the end of the Pinellas Bayway.
Sirata is another luxury property. Upscale and with the feel of a major island resort, it has multiple bars and restaurants to choose from.
Tradewinds Island Grand promotes itself as sort of a cruise ship on land. They have many activities to keep you and your family busy including five pools and a giant water slide right on the beach that is inflated and deflated daily.
Finally we have The Postcard Inn. This is a funky, quirky hotel decorated in what we call a I Dream of Jeanie theme. Think 50s surf culture. It also has what was until recently the oldest beach bar in St Pete Beach, which was named Swigwam until the hotel was renovated in 2010.
