Indian Rocks Beach and Indian Shores History and Information
Indian Rocks Beach and Indian Shores border one another on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico. Both communities are coveted vacation and residential destinations with their lavish accommodations and outstanding scenic views of white sandy beaches lined with dancing sea oats and the shimmering waters of the Gulf. Both Indian Rocks Beach and Indian Shores are conveniently located with only a 30 to 35 minute drive from the Tampa International Airport.
Indian Rocks Beach offers abundant vacation and residential accommodations, restaurants and shopping venues. Indian Rocks Beach’s popularity as a weekend getaway destination dates back to the 1920s but it is now a thriving one square mile residential community with approximately 4000 residents living in a combination of single-family homes, cottages, and high-rise condominiums.
A major attraction in Indian Rocks Beach is the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary, which has been known to house up to 8,000 birds per year. The Sanctuary has a dedicated staff of professionals and volunteers who serve the bird population with a world-renowned wild bird hospital, rehabilitation facilities, and a safe place to rest. For over 38 years, the Sanctuary has helped injured wild birds. The Sanctuary’s mission is dedicated to the rescue, repair & rehabilitation of injured birds and then their release back into nature.
Indian Rocks Beach’s name came from the huge red rocks early visitors found along this coast. Vacationers and locals enjoy exploring Indian Rock Beach’s past at the historic 1930s beach cottage of Carl and Caroline Moseley where they can meander through rooms of memorabilia, which includes photos, Indian artifacts left by the early inhabitants of the island, and exhibits depicting area history. Up until the construction of a wooden bridge joining the mainland to the island in 1916, people traveled by boat or barge to get to what had already become known as a summer resort.
Indian Shores is to the south of Indian Rocks Beach. Many homes on the west side of Gulf Blvd. front directly to the Gulf of Mexico, while the eastern side of Indian Shores fronts the gleaming Intracoastal Waterway. Residents of these valued waterfront condominiums, townhouses, and single-family homes relish the amenities that go with their location, including the convenience of private boat docks and bay-front swimming pools.
The early settlers of the Barrier Island were Indians and anglers. For decades, Indian Shores was known as the Town of Indian Rocks Beach, South Shore. In 1973, community leaders introduced a referendum to make a change to promote and preserve a separate and unique identity from Indian Rocks Beach. Thus, the name Indian Shores became official.
The Tiki Gardens, Indian Shores Beach Access on Gulf Boulevard is a popular attraction. The nearly 10-acre beachside Pinellas County Park offers convenient access to the inviting sandy shoreline and boasts plenty of parking, showers, restrooms, and a pedestrian crossing light all set in an attractive Florida style landscaping of palms and sea grasses.

Salt Rock Grill, Wood Fired Steaks & Seafood, is a beach landmark known for its great atmosphere, delectable food, and tantalizing drinks. World traveler and Executive Chef Tom Pritchard brings many years’ experience of whipping up culinary masterpieces to the Salt Rock Grill. He strives to serve patrons exactly that each meal. Salt Rock Grill is located on Gulf Boulevard in Indian Shores.
Also located on Gulf Boulevard in Indian Shores is the popular Pub Waterfront Restaurant and Lounge. Whether diners choose to eat inside or out, the amazing waterfront views provide the backdrop for an incredibly relaxing experience and a meal that tickles the palate. Seafood, prepared many ways, is there specialty. However, they also offer, among other things, delicious barbecue ribs, soy glazed Black Angus sirloin, pasta dishes, burgers, sandwiches and combination platters.
Crabby Bills has been serving fresh seafood in the Tampa Bay area for twenty-five years. Founders and restaurant namesake, Bill and Delores Loder, passed the tradition of great food and service on to their children and partners. Crabby Bills is primarily known for serving a marvelous selection of fresh local seafood but also they also satisfy the meat lover and vegetarian with a scrumptious array of choices. The restaurant is located on Gulf Boulevard in Indian Rocks Beach.
