Clearwater Beach transports the beach lover’s dreams into real life.  Located about 20 miles west of Tampa International Airport, it is world renowned for its white sand, sparkling waters, marinas, bathhouses, boat ramps, nightlife, restaurants, and accommodations galore.  Clearwater Beach is located on a separate barrier island, and actually belongs to the city of Clearwater.  The latest census data indicates a population of almost 9,000 with a median age of 58.6.

Visitors and residents can enjoy a free family-oriented festival nightly at the Sunsets at Pier 60.  Just south of Pier 60, the newly opened BeachWalk offers pedestrians, bicyclists, and rollerblade enthusiasts a safe and convenient access to the award-winning Clearwater Beach and spectacular Gulf of Mexico surf.  Lush landscaping along the walk complements nearby shops and a variety of superb eateries.

Interesting tales of commerce imbed the history of the island.  Many historical accounts say Ernest Tate built his home in the area and purchased the entire island in 1897 for $200 and named it "Tate's Island.”  According to stories by his descendants, the only means of reaching the island at that time were by rowboat, sailboat, or swimming.  The area’s popularity as a vacation destination began its early growth in 1915 when it became more accessible due to the construction of a drawbridge across Clearwater Harbor, joining the city of Clearwater with the island.  A new, much higher bridge called the Clearwater Memorial Causeway now arcs over the bay.  The name changed to Clearwater Beach in 1924 but the old name has recently resurfaced with the opening of Tate’s Island Grill, a Sandpearl Resort eatery, near the site of Ernest Tate’s home.
