A new scientific study conducted by Andrew Oswald, of the University of Warwick in England, and Stephen Wu, an economist at Hamilton College in New York, confirms what we already knew: Florida is one of the top 5 happiest states in the Nation.

Now, that is not to say that we aren’t without our share of problems. Sure, our unemployment is spiking, State Farm is trying to desert us to reduce their exposure to storm damage (although now it looks as if they’re going to stick around for a while), and we have been hit particularly hard by the housing crisis.
But on the flipside we have beaches, rockets, Mickey, islands, keys, oceans, lakes, springs, manatees, dolphins, fishing, sunshine, boating, sailing, diving, sunsets over the Gulf of Mexico, golf, and loads of nice people. We have 33 miles of white sand beaches from Clearwater to St. Pete Beach!
Florida is what I like to term “geographically desirable,” along with California and Hawaii (and a few of those southwestern states aren’t bad either).
St. Petersburg Beaches
I’m convinced that being surrounded by water covers our state with extra oxygen and salt in the air that permeates our brains and makes us happier. I know that every time I cross one of those causeways on the barrier islands I take a deep breath, smile and get a great feeling.
And did you know that St. Petersburg gets sunshine on an average of 360 days a year? I read somewhere that St. Petersburg has the United States record for consecutive days of sunshine at 732.
So a big thank you to the scientists for confirming what I already knew: this is a great place to live!
